*Can Ricky Williams stop screwing with the Dolphins??? In a move that must have made Dave Wannedstadt reach for his gun, Ricky Williams drove cross country to get back into the NFL’s drug program. Williams has to undergo about 10 drug tests a month...and if he fails or misses any of them he will be suspended for one year. I guess dude is really off the hippie lettuce....or he just had one big blast on the cross country trip. I can see him toking up, listening to the Grateful Dead with his Franco Harris-looking beard covered in indo smoke. I mean....did he pass by Nate Newton’s "Nice Dreams Van" on the way to South Florida??? But, for the Phins, this means they used the #2 pick in the draft on Ronnie Brown, Williams’ replacement after he stiffed them right before training camp one year ago. Miami....get rid of this problem to some idiot team that wants them. Oh yeah, Oakland signed up LaMont Jordan already.
*David Stern and Billy Hunter are gonna talk about ending this trivial NBA labor "war". Of course they are. I mean, Stern got a national forum of the Finals pregame show to discuss his side of the issues [and, I think everyone sided with him] while Hunter looks like an idiot saying nothing. Hunter, who is being nudged by the agents who got screwed over in the 1999 deal, is not in Stern’s class of negotiating. This is Jordan pushing away Bryon Russell and popping the championship winning shot here. I may be in the minority, but I think the NBA Labor War will go by without much of a tussle. Despite recent public explainations from both Stern and Hunter....the two sides know better than the make the NHL's mistake. Of course, in the NHL's defense...they are trying to revamp their entire financial system of the league. The NBA is just trying to figure out not how much of the pie each side gets....but which people should get the most of the pie.
*In one of the sickest displays of sports memorabilia grabbing...Lelands.com has pulled two pieces of the aircraft that Roberto Clemente crashed and died in 33 years ago from it’s auction.
*I have a good friend who is a Florida State fan...and nothing could please him more than hearing probable Seminole QB Wyatt Sexton may not be too probable. Dude was found wondering the streets looking for "God". He’s in the hospital and no one knows [read: is telling] why. Sexton’s dad.....uh, Mr. Sexton....said that it wasn’t drug abuse. However, my friend may get his wish of Xavier Lee taking over Free Shoes University’s playbook until Sexton comes off his cloud.
*Dwayne Casey is the new head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Quite the surprise, Casey has cut his teeth as an assistant for some time. He's been an assistant in Seattle for the past 11 years...and has also served as an assistant in the college ranks under Clem Haskins and Eddie Sutton. The rookie head coach actually gets a pretty sweet job. While Minnesota didn't make the playoffs last year...they aren't a bad team. They have former MVP Kevin Garnett and....uh....well, they aren't the Spurs. Think about this. Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett and LeBron James will all be breaking in new head coaches this fall.
*John Madden goes where the action is....and NBC is it! Next season, Sunday Night football is on NBC and Monday Night Football is on ESPN, completing a move that changes the NFL’s priorities of their night football importance. Now, the weekend’s "best game" will be on Sunday nights [they even are going to move late season games to do so]. So, with no NFL on ABC for the first time in my life....Madden [who only recently left Fox for ABC] will cruise on over to the peacock. NBC is also trying to lure current partner Al Michaels with him after the Finals conclude...but that may be a tall task. Michaels and MNF are pretty much synonymous...but seeing Al "Do You Believe In Miracles" Michaels jump ship in unlikely. If he really wants to do football still...I’m sure ESPN wouldn’t mind keeping him on instead of Mike Patrick [who I love doing ACC hoops but not NFL]....and ABC/ESPN has a boat load of college football as well. Personally, I’d like to see Michaels do a few ESPN baseball games. Either way, I guess I’ll have to get used to a new voice on my MADDEN FOOTBALL games.
*In other embarrassing Redskins news...the team and WR Rod Gardner have agreed to see other people. This comes in an offseason where Lavar Arrington blasted the team, we had a public love interest in Jason Campbell, Laverneaus Coles wanted and got out, and every player we seemed a lock to sign [Rolle, McQuarters, etc] went elsewhere. Basically...we scrapped our entire WR corps for a new, faster one. Santana Moss, David Patten, Kevin Dyson and Jimmy Farris are our new Posse. Good thing we have great quarterbacks, eh??? Crap!
*Speaking of receivers bolting.....Az Hakim [the guy that used to be somebody for those Super Bowl St Louis Rams] backed out of a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs and will instead sign with New Orleans. Hakim, who would have been playing for that Dick Vermiel in KC, decided that N'Awlins was more comfortable. Most believe it was a bigger, better, more comfortable contract that swayed Hakim. I mean, he would have been reunited with Vermeil in an offense he would thrive in. An offense that is short on receivers but long on a good QB [Trent Green] and excellent running game [Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson].
