Former high profile recruit on offense could finally break out for Buckeyes as a senior

Cade Stover is preparing to get drafted next month into the NFL and behind at Ohio State is a void left from his departure.

Stover was the key part of the Ohio State tight end room for the past couple of seasons and now someone else is going to have to step up.

That guy very well could be Gee Scott Jr., who is in line to be the starter at tight end after serving as a backup the last couple of seasons.  Scott is heading into his fifth season and is finally in line to be the guy after four patient years.

“I’ve come a long way. I’d argue that tight end is the most developmental position on the field,” Scott recently explained. “It takes a long time to get around to it. It takes a lot of work. It’s a full process. It’s not something that’s a one-year turnaround or a six-month turnaround where you come in and catch it on the fly. It’s something that takes a lot of time and attention.”

Scott was originally recruited as a wide receiver and was a top-40 overall recruit in the class of 2020. After arriving in Columbus, Scott eventually made the switch to tight end due to the crowded wide receiver room. Scott’s first season as a tight end came in 2021 when he made just five catches and he did the same again in 2022.

Stover is in line to be an NFL tight end and Jeremy Ruckert was the draft pick prior to him at the position for Ohio State. Scott has had to wait his turn behind both. Last season, the Washington native caught 10 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown.

“I’m thankful for my great coaching staff and a great unit around me. (I’m thankful for) guys from back then, starting off with (Jeremy Ruckert) and those guys to Cade (Stover). I think there’s been a great example set for how to attack blocking and being a tight end here at Ohio State. I’m thankful to have that example.”

Scott will have Will Kacmarek, Jelani Thurman, and Bennett Christian within the unit vying for snaps. The tight-end position has the potential to be productive in Columbus, at least more so than usual. Stover was north of 570 receiving yards last year for the Buckeyes.

Sometimes it takes patience in college football before a breakout. That appears to be the opportunity in front of Scott now.
