With the Seminoles in the middle of fall camp and the season-opener against LSU two and a half weeks away, the work being put in on the field clearly shows a desire not only to repeat last year’s win against the Tigers but also to exceed the expectations that come along with an AP preseason poll ranking of eighth amongst all FBS teams.

One position group that recently has been shining are the defensive backs. Head Coach Mike Norvell noted that between the experience and talent the older players have, and the potential in the younger players and newcomers, the DBs have been a force to be reckoned with. Norvell also mentioned that redshirt junior Greedy Vance Jr. has been an excellent playmaker and leader on the team.

FSU Football Fall Camp Observations: Jordan Travis-Johnny Wilson Connection Highlights Wednesday

After transferring from Louisville following the first two years of his collegiate career, Vance immediately made an impact with the Seminoles in 2022, appearing in all 13 games and ranking third in the ACC in interceptions. He also had 16 tackles throughout the season, four of which came in the matchup against Louisville in which the Noles won 35-31. Vance is continuing to make progress with the Seminoles and bring experience to the younger players, not just as a key player, but as a new player as well.

“It ain’t about being perfect, it’s about just trying to be your best,” Vance said when asked what advice he had for the newcomers. “If you don't be your best, just mess up at 100 miles per hour. Other than that just try to execute and be your best."

A Louisiana native, Vance recorded two tackles in the thrilling 24-23 victory against LSU in the Caesars Dome last year. Asked how much he's looking forward to competing against the Tigers again, Vance instead shifted the focus of his answer back to how hard the Seminoles are working this preseason.

"How much am I looking forward to it? As of right now we in camp but camp is the only thing that keeps me looking forward to it," Vance said. "It's like, if we prepare well in camp then we won't have nothing to worry about when the time comes. But if we keep on up and down, up and down then we're not putting ourselves in the best position when that time comes to compete at a high level."

Understanding the team is a task in itself with so many newcomers on the roster. Vance, who is in his second year at Florida State, noted he is always trying to get people energized and on the same page during practices. “I think my communication is top 10, I think I know all of the plays like the back of my hand.”

As the Noles continue into week three of fall camp, Vance along with the rest of the team knows the work is nowhere near done.

“We just gotta get better and keep climbing.” Said Vance.
