Surprising Maple Leafs Hang in There for Game 6 Win
Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Less than a week ago, many Toronto Maple Leafs had given up their team for Dead Men Walking. However, after two thrilling wins things have turned around. On Thursday night, the Maple Leafs defied expectations and clinched a crucial 2-1 victory over the Bruins in Game 6 of their playoff series. Who knew the team could play this kind of game; and, even more interesting, who knew that they would?

This Maple Leafs team has been a surprise. Despite facing adversity and missing key players like William Nylander for three early games and Auston Matthews for the last few games, Toronto’s game has been a display of solidity and determination. The team has now forced a decisive Game 7.

Three Key Surprises for This Maple Leafs Team

At least three surprising factors contributed to the Maple Leafs’ impressive Game 6 win and two-game comeback to tie the series at three games apiece.

Surprise One: William Nylander’s All-Around Heroics

One of the most surprising aspects of the game was William Nylander’s strong performance. He’s not just an offensive-focused player, he’s playing physical hockey and contributing hits and blocked shots. After missing the first three games of the playoffs, Nylander emerged as the team’s offensive hero of the night, scoring both of Toronto’s goals.

Nylander’s offensive power, defensive willingness, and clutch scoring in crucial moments have caught many off guard. He’s not known to be a 200-foot player; however, he’s providing a much-needed spark for the Maple Leafs when they needed it most. He’s emerging as a team leader.

Surprise Two: Joseph Woll’s Standout Goaltending

Another surprising element in Game 6 was goaltender Joseph Woll’s standout performance. He not only matched the great goalie play of the Bruins’ Jeremy Swayman, but he bested it. Making just his fourth career playoff start, Woll has shown composure beyond his experience.

In last night’s game, he turned aside 22 of 23 shots to stifle the Bruins’ powerful offense. Woll’s steady presence between the pipes instilled confidence in his teammates and played a pivotal role in securing Toronto’s win. Many fans believed he had the potential to be a solid goalie, but his great play has been a surprise for his team.

Surprise Three: The Maple Leafs Have Shown Defensive Resilience

Despite facing a challenging opponent in the Bruins, the Maple Leafs displayed a surprising commitment to defensive play throughout the game. This is not the Maple Leafs team that most fans have been used to seeing. The team’s defensive contributions are outweighing their offensive contributions.

Specifically, who could believe that the Maple Leafs could win two close games with a power play that has been far from effective? The team’s defense has blocked shots and played smart positional hockey. They’ve also frustrated Boston’s offense and limited their scoring chances. The Bruins have had a tough time just getting pucks to the net over the past two games.

The Bottom Line for the Maple Leafs

As the Maple Leafs head into a winner-take-all Game 7, their surprising performance in Game 6 has injected a renewed sense of confidence and belief within the team and its fans. Nylander’s heroics, coupled with Woll’s standout goaltending and the team’s defensive soundness have paved the way for the team’s success.

Toronto has defied the odds to come back strong in this series. By doing so, they have positioned themselves for a thrilling Game 7 showdown against the Bruins. Now, the last question is whether the surprising Maple Leafs can win Game 7 and continue their pursuit of playoff success.
