Inter Milan Defender Stefan De Vrij Admits: ‘Last Season We Dropped Too Many Points, Each Match Is Fundamental’

Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij admits that the Nerazzurri slipped up in too many “smaller” matches last season.

Speaking to InterTV ahead of the team’s Serie A match against Cagliari this evening, via FCInterNews, the Dutchman acknowledged that Inter dropped too many points last season as they fell far behind Napoli in the Serie A title race.

Inter face Cagliari in their second match of the Serie A season in a few moments’ time.

The Rossoblu are, on paper, far from the toughest opposition that the Nerazzurri will face this season.

But that is true of plenty of the teams who Inter dropped points against last season.

The likes of Empoli, Udinese, Spezia, and Monza beat the Nerazzurri. And then there were draws against relegation candidates like Sampdoria and Salernitana.

All of this will be enough to make Inter fans understand that they can’t be complacent or take anything for granted in matches against teams like newly-promoted Cagliari.

The Sardinians showed that their up to the task in the top-flight with a gritty draw against Torino last weekend.

And de Vrij has made clear that he and his teammates understand full well the significant and difficulty of matches like this.

“This is a very important match,” de Vrij said ahead of this evening’s match against the Rossoblu.

“We have to realize how much that’s the case, because last season we dropped too many points.”

The Dutchman remarked that “Every match is fundamental. We have to keep on winning, and this match is no different.”

Of facing Claudio Ranieri’s Cagliari said, de Vrij said that “We have to be prepared.”

“We know the way they play – very direct on second balls, with a lot of crosses.”

De Vrij said that “We’ve prepared well in training this week. Now we have to show that we’re ready.”
