Premier League Game of the Week: Fulham and Liverpool battle it out once more on Sunday 4/21

We've been blessed with some amazing matches during this Premier League season. Remember Chelsea and Manchester City's astonishing 4-4 draw? Or Arsenal's last-kick comeback against Luton? How about Aston Villa's defensive master class against Arsenal last week? They've all been stunners in one way or another.

Lost within that shuffle of "great games" is Liverpool vs. Fulham at Anfield. On paper, it's hard to remember what happened; it looks like the sort of game Liverpool should've won convincingly. That's not quite how it went down. It wound up being an end-to-end 4-3 dogfight that saw Liverpool pushed to the brink and Fulham refusing to give quarter.

We expect that kind of fight from Liverpool; it's long been a never-say-die kind of club. But Fulham? Posh, family-friendly, eminently lovable Fulham? Who would've thought? This season hasn't exactly been a stellar one for the London club but it's been peppered with unexpectedly brilliant and gritty performances like this. In this installment of our Premier League Game of the Week, we're excited to give Fulham its due.

The good about Fulham: it's a storied club and one that invested in American players long before doing so was normal. U. S. Men's National Team legend Brian McBride spent a few seasons at Fulham after being a part of MLS' debut push; while there, he became the first American to captain a Premier League team and had the in-stadium bar named after him. More Americans followed, including Clint Dempsey and Eddie Johnson. Today, its starting center-back pairing of Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson is an all-American affair.

The bad about Fulham: it's inconsistent. That exciting 4-3 against Liverpool was followed by back-to-back 5-0 victories over Nottingham Forest and West Ham; those wins were followed by an embarrassing losses to Newcastle and Burnley. When Fulham is on, it's borderline unplayable. When it's off, even Vincent Kompany's men can find a way through it.

Will it be on against Liverpool this weekend? It's coming off of a strong 2-0 win over West Ham while Liverpool is coming off of a week featuring a loss to Crystal Palace and a Europa League elimination, so signs point to yes. But if Liverpool channels its frustration into action on the field, Fulham will need every last drop of its famous grit to survive.

Fulham vs. Liverpool, Sunday, April 21, 11:30 a.m. ET

Here's where we think the best bets are hiding:

Scoring. Fulham is surprisingly good at two opposite tasks: keeping clean sheets and failing to score. In the 33 games its played so far this season, Fulham has put up a bagel in 18 of them — eight clean-sheet wins, eight goalless losses, and two goalless draws. (There's that inconsistency again!) With the result of this one up in the air, we like the idea of betting on only one team to score at +150. Fulham's fallen on both sides of that bet enough times this season to make it a worthwhile punt.

Goalscorer. Liverpool's hero in its last match against Fulham was Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. His first-half screamer was as unexpected as it was stunning, and his defensive work in the center of the park fended Fulham off when the game got tight. We're backing him as an anytime goalscorer at +300.

Player Shots. Portuguese midfielder Joao Palhinha has been one of Fulham's breakout stars this season. While he's technically a central or defensive midfielder, he's liable to let shots rip at any time (and surprise the opposition when he does it.) At +162 to have more than two shots in this game, we think he's a steal — and risk-tolerant bettors might want to consider backing him to have more than three at +500.
